Browse Dedicated TV Securely with HTTPS

Postby bennelsworth » 15th Aug 2008, 23:53

With HTTPS encryption data passing through the internet is (obviously) encrypted which means that people snooping in on your activites won't actually be able to see what you're doing. Network admins at your place of work, or even your ISP wont know what you're doing.

It is very simple for you to browse our secure site, just change the HTTP in the URL bar to HTTPS.
Image

All that happens now is that your computer will create a very secure connection to our server before serving up pages from Dedicated TV. All traffic your computer sends to or receives from Dedicated TV is encrypted and it is almost impossible for anyone else to examine this encrypted connection to view is contents.

You may be asked about viewing un-secure items ocassionally, this will normally just be images from external sites so it if safe to view them. All content coming from Dedicated TV will be passed through the encrypted connection.

*Only stuff from Dedicated TV will be encrypted - we have no control over external sites such as RapidShare etc.

Your browser will show you that our certificate has been verified and the connection is secure:

In FF3 you'll have to click Add An Exception when the picture of the passport man comes up, then Get Certificate, then Add Exception.

Of course it might not say any of thoe things, I can't remember.

This does not apply anymore

If one is using the new Google Chrome browser, here is the message one gets when trying to reach DedicatedTV via https:

Image

If one clicks on "Proceed anyway", one will get to the main login page. Note the red diagonal line through https in the address line.

Scary stuff to the uninformed noob and not well understood by those with a moderate degree of computer competence.

Not trying to instill fear into the hearts of the natives - just trying to be helpful with accurate information.

At least Chrome will let a user get to the DTV home page without too much BS.

FF3 will not permit a user to view the page without adding an "exception".

Don't use IE, so no comments.

IE just says "There is a problem with this certificate" with a "continue" button... Like Chrome.

:( Not on my computer!
After entering the https address, I can get to the front page without any warnings but the red diagonal line through https is still there. (screen print available)
The cautionary yellow triangle on the right side of the address bar reads: "There are several SSL errors on this page: Server's certificate does not match the URL; Server's certificate is not trusted; This page contains some insecure elements" (can't get a screen print to work)
Looks like you have more tweekin' and swearin' to do.
Or, you could make a call for alien intervention.

Are you sure you are on dtv2.co.uk ? I had to restart Chrome for it to see a new cert and turn green.

By the sounds of what you have entered, you are on a different domain AND/OR you have the old certificate, since the new one is trusted, and should say it is issued by GoDaddy somewhere. (At first chrome was still red and said it was issues by godaddy so i restarted and it was fine then)

And yes, there will be "insecure" elements, but that will be things like the screen shots you posted above, which are on a different, HTTP website.

Edit: I have now added the conf screenshots from various browsers showing the valid cert has been verified.

Benny turned it off a few weeks ago. He thought it might be causing problems with the server.
